Paphos Castle
Castle of Paphos
Originally built as a Byzantine fort to protect the harbour from invaders, Paphos Castle was rebuilt by the Lusignans in the 13th century AD, destroyed by the Venetians in 1570 during the Ottoman invasion and rebuilt by the Ottomans after they captured the island in the 16th century AD. During the time of Ottomans, Paphos Castle was restored, expanded, and strengthened to what it is today
The castle itself is a stunning example of stone architecture. The Castle is connected to the harbour through an arched battle way bridge. Once inside the castle there is not much to see or do, but once you reach the top platform you will see the breath taking view of Paphos Marina. Paphos Castle is also used by many people, as a backdrop for memorable Paphos holiday pictures.
During its long history, the Paphos Castle has been used as a fort, as a prison cell, and even as a storage area for salt when the island was a British colony. In 1935 it was declared an ancient monument and today is considered as one of the hallmarks of the Paphos region. Paphos Castle is also listed in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites.
For those interested in culture, Paphos Castle is a definite must see during your trip to Cyprus. Many cultural events take place at Paphos Castle square, there is an international opera 'Aphrdite Opera' performed in September each year at the square, where artists from all over the world take part.
